In 1526, Babar attacked India and established his empire here.

According to Baburnama, Mir Baqi, commander of Babur, destroyed the Ram Temple in 1528 and established the Babri Masjid here.

In 1853, during British colonial rule, there was for the first time a clash between Hindus and Muslims. Then, to stop this violent clash, the Britishers in 1859 allowed Muslims to do their rituals inside Babri Masjid, and Hindus were allowed to do puja at Ram Chabutra.

After independence, in 1949, Lord Rama devotees placed idols of Ram and Sita in Babri Masjid. The government declared the Babri Masjid a controversial structure.

The Faizabad district court in 1986 gave permission to Hindus to do their puja rituals in Babri Masjid. Then Allahabad Court in 1989 took over the case and ordered the maintenance of status quo of Faizabad district court. The site was opened for the Hindus.

Mahant Raghubir, in 1885, filed a petition in the Faizabad court to construct a Ram temple near the Babri Masjid.

In 1990, the BJP, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and RSS started the pan-India movement for the construction of Ram Temple.

In 1992, Karsevak destroyed Babri Masjid, and communal riots took place in the whole of India, which led to the deaths of over 2000 people.

The BJP, under the leadership of Modi, announced the construction of Ram Mandir in the 2014 election manifesto.

In 2019, the Supreme Court’s five judges bench declared the Babri Masjid complex would be given to a trust for building Ram Temple, and Muslims have been allotted 5 acres of land in Dhanipur village, 22 km from Ayodhya, for the construction of the Masjid.
