Q: Which layer of the atmosphere has a very thin layer of air?

  1. Exosphere
  1. Stratosphere
  1. Mesosphere
  1. Thermosphere

Answer- Exosphere

Detailed Explanation-

The envelope of gases around the earth is called atmosphere. The gravitational force of the earth attracts this envelope of gases. The composition of these gases in the atmosphere is explained as follows:

Nitrogen              –  78%

Oxygen               –  21%

Argon                  –  0.93%

Carbon dioxide    –  0.03%

There are also water vapours and dust particles in the atmosphere.

There are five layers of the atmosphere. a) Troposphere; b) Stratosphere; c) Mesosphere; d) Thermosphere; e) Exosphere

Troposphere-

  • This layer has an average height of 13 km.
  • All weather-related activities like rainfall, hailstorms, lightning, etc. occur in this layer.

Stratosphere-

  • Stratosphere is the second layer of the atmosphere.
  • It ranges from 13 km to 50 km.
  • This layer is free from all weather-related phenomena. Therefore, aeroplanes fly here.
  • It contains an ozone layer, which protects us from the UV rays of the sun.
  • There is a boundary between the stratosphere and the third-layer mesosphere called the stratopause.

Mesosphere-

  • This layer lies above the stratosphere.
  • The height extends up to 80 km.
  • Most of the meteors burn up here.
  • Mesosphere is also the coldest layer of the atmosphere.

Thermosphere-

  • This layer is the hottest layer.
  • The ionosphere is a part of it.
  • It lies between 80 km and 400 km.
  • Radio waves of the earth are reflected back to the earth by this layer.

Exosphere-

  • Uppermost layer of the atmosphere is Exosphere.
  • Exosphere is the thinnest layer of the atmosphere because light gases like hydrogen and helium float into space from here.
